OVER the years Hampshire has had its fair share of silver screen appearances with many Hollywood blockbusters and viral Netflix originals shot in the county.

It is easy to see why Hampshire was chosen with historic dockyards, airstrips and castles, there is an abundance of great filming locations.

Winchester Cathedral is an extremely popular film location in the county having dubbed as the Vatican in The Da Vinci Code.

Charles and Diana’s wedding and Lord Mountbatten’s funeral on Netflix’s The Crown, where both filmed at the cathedral, respectively transformed into St Paul’s Cathedral and Westminster Abbey.

Other Hampshire locations have also appeared in The Crown including Rhinefield House which portrayed one of the royal residences on the Balmoral estate and Somerley House which acted as a stand in for the royal couple's country estate, Highgrove.

The Needles Lighthouse on the Isle of Wight featured during the opening sequence of Howards' Way, filming also took place in Bursledon, Lymington and Hamble.

The Isle of Wight also featured in the 1967 Les Misérables where you can spot Fort Victoria.

Another popular period drama, Downton Abbey, was also filmed in Hampshire at the Highclere Castle estate to the north of the county.

Tom Cruise shot scenes for his film The Edge of Tomorrow at Barton Stacey in Test Valley.

Cruise, co-star Emily Blunt shot scenes for the alien combat movie at the former army base in Barton Stacey, near Andover. They set up camp for two and a half weeks in November and December 2012.

James Bond has also been a regular visitor to Hampshire over the years. A total of four James Bond films have been shot at various locations including RAF Odiham, Hawley Woods in Farnborough and Eelmoor tank driving range in Aldershot. The airborne shots were taken above the army base with Aldershot doubling as North Korea. The finale of Diamonds are Forever was filmed in Southampton Docks with a murder attempt onboard the ship the Canberra. 

Russell Crowe and cast filmed the opening sequence of the Oscar-winning movie Gladiator in Alice Holt Forest.
