Police have released bodycam footage after a fraudster tried to con an 80-year-old man out of thousands of pounds in cash.

The scammer, who can be heard speaking with a police officer in the video, contacted an 80-year-old man from Cleveleys and was able to convince him that he was his brother-in-law.

He told the pensioner his taxi firm was having financial problems and that he needed to borrow some money.

The pensioner, believing what he was being told on the phone, went to his bank to carry out the transaction, but fortunately a member of staff at the bank alerted the police to the situation.

A police officer then attended the bank and spoke to the fraudster on the phone.

The video released shows the conversation between the offender and the officer.

Lancashire Telegraph:

A spokesperson for the police said: "Fraudsters can be very persuasive, relentless and ruthless and will often pretend to be from a trusted source such as a bank, the police, a utility provider or - as in this case, a distant family member - in order to get hold of personal or financial information or even cash.

"The police will never ring and ask for your account details.

"The bank will never ask for any details such as passwords or card details.

"If you receive a phone call of this nature then please put down the handset – it will be a scam."

Police are now asking anyone with elderly relatives to share this message with them to help prevent future scams.
