IT is easy to be cynical, especially in these dark days both physical and metaphorical. The saloon bar bores of old have been replaced by the people on social media with too much time on their hands who say ‘what’s the point?’

So we are glad to report that a campaign for a pedestrian crossing on Andover Road, Weeke, is moving towards success.

It has been a cross-party effort although not devoid of the usual political squabbling. But the initial spark came not from politicians but local people, parents worried about safety. It shows what can be achieved if people organise and work to a common goal.

In the long term this stretch of Andover Road will became a very long cul-de-sac with the main road due to be diverted through the Barton Farm/Kings Barton estate. The current rate of construction means that the diversion is likely to be years in the future.

Obviously the proximity of local elections in May, including the contests cancelled last year, will have focused minds at the county council. But people have to work with that and not sink into a puddle of complacent cynicism.
