SIR: In 1967, whilst the uk pop charts featured hits such as Good Vibrations, Yellow Submarine and Strangers in the Night, across the pond ‘Winchester Cathedral’ became a number one hit in the USA charts.

Fifty years later it was suggested to the then Dean that the Cathedral might mark this anniversary. Geoff Stephens, the song’s composer and lyricist, was approached about this and not only gave his full support but also rewrote the lyrics to celebrate and help with the Cathedral Appeal.

This new version was subsequently recorded by the Cathedral Choristers under the direction of Andrew Lumsden and also performed at a Gala fund raising concert. Geoff and the Dean were both present at the concert.

Sadly Geoff died last month, just two weeks before Dean James, so it was very appropriate that at the Dean’s funeral last week the music before the service included ‘Winchester Cathedral’.

We will miss both James and Geoff, two very gifted men in very different spheres with an unusual link.
