SHE is expected to return to TV screens across the nation soon.

Winchester's own Hannah Williams, who is competing on The Voice UK, has progressed from the blind auditions – moving one step closer to the finals.

She is on Sir Tom Jones' team and, if the show follows its usual format, will be performing in the battle round on Saturday January 23.

As previously reported, the 38-year-old is a vocal consultant and teacher at Winchester University, where she graduated from in 2006.

Speaking in an online interview with the uni's Music Centre director, Neil Valentine, she described her journey so far.

"There are some things that I'm not allowed to say," said Hannah, "but the opportunity to do this became available back in Spring last year."

"I had a whole string of auditions on Zoom and meetings with producers. I'd say I performed 30 to 40 songs over the period – from March onwards.

"It's a long process, but it has been absolutely amazing. I can imagine it would normally be a bit more intense with face-to-face auditions in groups.

"But Covid pushed the process to Zoom. It is a more private and detached encounter."

Hannah is a soul singer who also fronts Hannah Williams and the Affirmations – a Bristol-based band.

In 2017, her vocals were sampled on Jay-Z’s title track 4.44.

She continued: "A singing competition on TV is not something that I would usually even consider.

"But I thought you know what, it's 2020, the apocalypse has happened, what the hell else is there to do?"

Hannah held a workshop with the university on Wednesday January 13 to help encourage and guide young performers.

Professor Elizabeth Stuart, First Deputy Vice-Chancellor of the University of Winchester, said: "The University of Winchester is delighted and very proud to see Hannah on The Voice.

"We have enjoyed her amazing voice over many years and we are delighted to share it now with Sir Tom Jones and the nation through the programme. We will be rooting for her all the way."
