DEREK Hatton, a resident at Sunrise of Winchester, has celebrated his 100th birthday.

Derek celebrated this remarkable milestone in the company of his daughter, two grandsons and granddaughter who visited the care home wearing PPE and adhering to social distancing guidelines.

He also spoke to all of his grandchildren and great-grandchildren through FaceTime where they were able to sing Happy Birthday to him.

Sunrise of Winchester on Stockbridge Road also marked the occasion by baking a personalised train-inspired birthday cake, recognising Derek’s passionate interest in steam trains.

With 14 grandchildren and great-grandchildren, Derek says he was quite overwhelmed by the outpouring of cards and well wishes from friends and family.

He was also especially pleased to have received a birthday card from the Queen.

Since moving to Sunrise of Winchester in September 2019, he has been a big character at the care home and has made many friends.

Derek also takes part in numerous activities, including completing 30-minute sessions on the care home’s exercise bike.

He says that he loves living at Sunrise of Winchester due to the dedication of team members and the family atmosphere throughout the home.

Before joining Sunrise of Winchester, Derek served in the Royal Air Force and also worked as a civil engineer before retiring to pursue his love of steam trains.

Asked what his secret to living a long life is, Derek said: “A little luck and keeping active”.

Celebrating Derek’s birthday, Antoinette Roberts, the general manager at Sunrise of Winchester, said: “The entire team at Sunrise of Winchester were absolutely delighted to celebrate Derek’s very special birthday.

“It was wonderful to see the amazing cake our dining team prepared which was thoroughly enjoyed by Derek and his family.”
