IT may not seem like it, but Basingstoke has changed a dramatically in the past ten years.

From the demolition of Telford House to the building of St Michael's Retail Park, the town has changed as time has gone by.

We've taken a trip down memory lane using pictures from Google Street View taken before, in 2008 and 2009, and then after, in 2019.

Take a scroll through our gallery below to see Basingstoke past and present.

Festival Place

As the pictures show, Festival place has had a serious revamp over the last decade.

Between 2018 and 2019, the shopping centre underwent a major refurbishment project, with a new identity, logo and signage throughout the centre and the car park.

St Johns Square which was part of the old town centre was refurbished with new shopfronts, fascias and the square given a new modern look with outdoor seating.

Chineham Shopping

Whilst Chineham Shopping hasn’t changed dramatically over the last few years, tons of shops have changed hands.

The former Next and Brantano have changed into Poundland and an M&S Foodhall.

St Michael’s Retail Park

The new retail park was built on what used to be land empty since the 1990s.

Plans for the St Michael’s Retail Park, on the site of the former Smiths Industries Aerospace site, in Winchester Road, were given the green light in 2017.

The retail park is now home to brands such as Aldi, Nandos, Costa Coffee, and Oak Furniture Land.

Basingstoke Leisure Park

The leisure Park has seen a whole host of changes including the addition of iFLY.

Gastons Wood

GO Outdoors is moved into the former MFI store premises in Gaston’s Wood back in December 2009.
The site then saw a major overhaul of new shops back in 2013 with the likes of Lidl and Dunelm.

Houndmills

The Basingstoke eyesore Telford House was demolished in 2015 to make way for new trade units and a drive-thru restaurant.

The site is now occupied by major brands such as Greggs and a drive through Starbucks.
