SIR: Further to recent correspondence re traffic pollution and congestion, particularly in the narrow streets adjacent to the cathedral, part of the problem is the use of particularly huge bin lorries by Biffa.
Last week one of these monsters was stuck in Symonds Street holding up all the traffic (with all their engines running) for about 20 minutes whilst the operatives tried to manoeuvre past a parked car with its wing mirror sticking out - apparently they had to call out their supervisor to come and solve their problem.
There have always been problems with bin lorries in our narrow streets but the current lorries are enormous and quite unsuited to the streets they are being used in. Surely the council could insist on smaller lorries for the narrow streets in the town centre? After all the council are the customer and Biffa are the supplier.
Peter Grant,
Symonds Street,
