A Romsey NHS worker who has been working flat out to respond to the coronavirus crisis has been left feeling scared and “unprotected” by police after four of her car windows were smashed in while she was asleep.

The Southampton General doctor, who does not wish to be named, had her car vandalised on Mountbatten Avenue in the early hours on Tuesday.

She was alerted to the damage by her neighbours, who were woken up by the noise at around 4.30am.

She said: “My neighbour woke up because of the noise when they were breaking the glass.

“I heard the noise but I thought I was dreaming, then my neighbour knocked on my door and that’s how I found out.

“I was half asleep, I couldn’t really digest the whole thing.

“Why break four windows? They were trying to damage the whole car, that’s why I was scared.”

Despite the extensive damage, nothing was taken from the car, the owner said.

However, the earliest appointment available to replace one of the windows is two weeks away, which for a NHS worker, is extremely inconvenient - and potentially increases her coronavirus risk.

“I work for the NHS, I’ve been working flat out and I do on calls so I need my car,” she said.

“Today I took the train but it’s not ideal when I’m trying to avoid being around people before going to the hospital.”

Although her neighbours have come forward with CCTV, no suspects have been identified and police say the vandalism has been filed “pending any further information coming to light that will present us with a viable line of enquiry to pursue”.

The doctor says she feels “unprotected” by police officers who she claims have been provided with footage by a number of residents nearby.

A spokesperson from Hampshire Constabulary said: “We received a report at 5.10am on October 27 that the windows of a Nissan had been smashed on Mountbatten Avenue, Romsey.

“Anyone with information about this incident is asked to contact police on 101, quoting 44200416797.”
