A MAP of coronavirus cases across the UK has revealed which areas of Winchester and its surroundings currently have some of the highest rates of infection.

The government map breaks down coronavirus rates into smaller geographic areas, including nations and counties. At a lower level, it breaks them into Middle Layer Super Output Areas, or MSOAs, which are smaller, postcode-linked areas that are used for a range of government statistics.

Areas are colour coded by their rate, with purples and blues being the highest, and greens and yellows the lowest.

In our area, the MSOA with the highest number of cases in the week to October 14, when the latest figures are available, was Winchester Central and South, which had 15 and a weekly rolling rate of 136.4 cases per 100,000 people.

Springvale and Itchen Abbas, which had eight cases and a weekly rolling rate of 116.3 cases per 100,000 people.

The number of cases and the infection rate per 100,000 people, which is shown in brackets, in the other areas are as follows:

Bishop's Waltham and Waltham Chase: 7 (72.4)

Colden Common and Twyford: 8 (84.0)

Denmead and Southwick: 5 (48.8)

New Alresford: 5 (59.1)

Oliver's Battery and Hursley: 8 (97.8)

Swanmore, Hambledon and West Meon: 5 (57.4)

Whiteley, Knowle and Wickham: 5 (42.7)

Winchester Stanmore: 3 (44.2)

It is good news for the area of South Wonston, Sutton Scotney and Micheldever where the map reports the rate as “suppressed,” meaning that there have been no recorded cases in the previous week.

However, given this map is based on data from the previous week, it does not take into account the latest infections, while the infections shown are based on home address.
