DISABLED sailor Geoff Holt has was crowned BBC South Sports Personality of the Year for 2007 as he picked up an awards double at a glittering ceremony at the De Vere Hotel last night (Monday December 3).
The 41 year-old, who lives in Shedfield with his wife Elaine and five year old son Timothy, entered the record books earlier this year after becoming the first disabled person ever to sail solo around Great Britain, was also named Sportsman of the Year.
Mr Holt, who is paralysed from the neck down, polled a staggering 57 per cent of the public vote to win the top award.
He set off on his Personal Everest challenge in May from Hamble and was supported along the way by his family and crew.
Mr Holt said after his win: "Thank you so much to everyone who voted for me. I can't begin to tell you what an honour it is to win these awards, particularly to win the overall Sports Personality award and by such a margin.
"I could not have climbed my Personal Everest without my crew and I thank each and everyone of them and also my wonderful sponsors, Blake Lapthorn Tarlo Lyons, whose generous sponsorship made it possible.
"Thanks too to all of the companies, clubs, groups and individuals who provided equipment, specialist advice and support, this really was a team event that could only have happened with the help and support of you all. I will be forever grateful to each and everyone of you."
