SWAP beef for broccoli and lamb for lentils as today is World Vegetarian Day.

In 1977, the North American Vegetarian Society founded World Vegetarian Day and every year on October 1 it continues to be marked worldwide.

Now in its 43rd year, the annual celebration is a time to promote going meatless in your diet and learn of the benefits to moving toward a plant-based lifestyle.

But the real question is: where in Winchester can vegetarians eat and drink?

Here, in no particular order, is a list of the city's top spots:

1. Rawberry

Rawberry is a family owned and run juice bar and cafe based in the heart of the city.

The menu is 100 per cent vegetarian, with many began and gluten free choices.

Staff also say they are always more than happy to assist in creating substitutes for any other dietary requirements.

Rawberry, in St George's Street, opens at 9am Monday to Saturday and from 10am on Sunday.

2. Piecaramba!

Piecaramba! is Rob Litchfield and Phil Linssen's business, and was born October 2016.

The guys are passionate about pies, comics and all things pop culture.

Although not exclusively vegetarian, their themed restaurant has a number of veggie and vegan options.

These include The Fun Guy with mushroom and walnut filling, and the barbecue-styled pulled jackfruit-filled Porky Pie.

Piecaramba!, in Parchment Street, is open from 12noon on weekdays and 11am on weekends.

3. Kyoto Kitchen

Kyoto Kitchen serves authentic Japanese dishes and had a lengthy mention in the Michelin Guide last year.

Not only are the ratings and reviews impressive, the restaurant's vegetarian and vegan options are highly recommended on Tripadvisor.

The Parchment Street restaurant opens for lunch at 12noon every day apart from Monday, and everyday for dinner from 6pm.

4. The Golden Lion

Being a vegetarian doesn't mean you can't enjoy good pub food.

The Golden Lion in Alresford Road has a whole menu dedicated to the vegan diet, with three starters, five main courses and three desserts on offer.

This seperate vegan menu is available at the pub seven days a week.

The pub kitchen opens at varied times depending on the day (once for lunch then for dinner).

5. The Stable

If you're a vegetarian who enjoys a bit of atmosphere, then The Stable is the place to be.

With regular live music, the restaurant and cider bar also offers vegetarian pizza, pies, starters and sides.

When the weather is nice, customers can also opt to sit outside.

The Stable, in The Square, is open from midday every day and closes as late as midnight on some days.
