UNCERTAINTY surrounds some of Southampton's most popular Christmas events and attractions.

Every festive season thousands flock to visit the Christmas Market in the city centre.

Now approaching its fifth year it boasts food, entertainment and gifts.

However, amid the coronavirus crisis, there is uncertainty whether the event will go ahead.

It comes just a week after the announcement that all events due to take place on council land between now and the end of October have been cancelled.

According to the council, future events including the Christmas market are now under review in line with Government guidance.

A Southampton City Council spokesperson said: "A decision was made to withdraw consent for all large events that were due to take place on council land in the city between now and the end of October. We will be keeping future events under review in line with Government guidance and emerging information regarding the pandemic, as well as exploring all opportunities for events to be delivered virtually."

Another popular festive offering is the ice rink at Westquay, but plans are still being finalised says a spokesperson for the shopping centre. A full update on the rest of 2020 is reportedly being drafted.

Meanwhile, Remembrance Sunday, when millions across the nation pay their respects to servicemen and women is due to take place just over a month away.

Royal British Legion branches are being urged to follow government guidelines.

A spokesperson for The Royal British Legion said: “Since Covid-19 measures first came into effect, we have instructed Royal British Legion branches that all activity undertaken by our members must be conducted in accordance with national and local government restrictions. We are encouraging our branches and members to continue supporting local Remembrance services and parades that follow government guidelines and only where social distancing measures can be fully adhered to."
