WINCHESTER has again seen no new cases of coronavirus in the last 24 hours.

The increase in coronavirus cases in Hampshire has been accelerating in recent weeks but the figure for the Winchester City Council district remains at 540, with an infection rate of 432.5 people in every 100,000.

It is the second day there has been no increase according to the belatedly updated Government website at 7.50pm this evening.

Meanwhile, 38 new cases of have been reported in Hampshire in the last 24 hours, the biggest daily increase since the first spike in March/April.

There have been no new deaths from Covid-19 in the last 24 hours in Hampshire.

In the Hampshire County Council area today the number of new infections has increased by 38 to 5,834 lab-confirmed cases of the virus, up from 5,796 yesterday, Wednesday.

Nationally, 40 deaths have been reported in the UK, bringing the total number of confirmed reported deaths to 41,902, according to the ONS website this evening.

The rate of infection in Hampshire stands at 422.0 cases per 100,000 people, far lower than the England average, shown this afternoon as 637.0. The Winchester rate is 432.5, higher than the county average but much lower now than nationally.

Today there have now been 416,363 cases of the virus across the UK. This is an increase of 6,634 in the last 24 hours, the sharpest rise since the first spike in March/April.

The number of deaths in Hampshire hospitals remains at 612. The figure for fatal cases at the Hampshire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, which includes the Royal Hampshire County Hospital in Winchester, is 162. For the other local county trusts, Portsmouth Hospital NHS Trust, 232; Solent NHS Trust, 2; Southern Health NHS Foundation Trust, 17; University Southampton NHS Foundation Trust, 199.

The R number in the south-east is between 1.1 and 1.4 meaning that on average every 10 people infected will infect between 11 and 14 other people.

The growth rate in the south east is between +3% and +7% which means the number of new infections is growing by 3% to 7% every day.

Some 15 patients, up one, were admitted to hospital with coronavirus on Tuesday in the south-east region that includes Hampshire. There are 99 with the condition in hospital today (Thursday), up ten, with five on ventilators today, down two, according to the ONS.

Total number of deaths since the start of the pandemic of people who had had a positive test result for Covid-19 and died within 28 days of the first positive test, the figures are Hampshire 725, Portsmouth 78 and Southampton 123.

THE annual funfair in Alresford has been cancelled after civic chiefs said they could not support the event because of the risk to public health.

The fair is held every October in Broad Street, closing the road to through traffic for a day. It was due to be held on Thursday October 15. It usually attract thousands of people.

A CORONAVIRUS contact tracing app has launched across England and Wales following months of delay and questions about its effectiveness.

The latest version of the app has been in testing among residents on the Isle of Wight and in the London borough of Newham since mid-August, after the first was marred by technical issues and eventually scrapped.

A TOTAL of 6,634 new coronavirus cases were recorded on Thursday, Public Health England medical director Yvonne Doyle said, which is the highest single-day figure since the outbreak began.

The Government said that as of 9am on Thursday, there had been a further 6,634 lab-confirmed cases of coronavirus in the UK, taking the overall number of cases confirmed to 416,363.
