A BOMB disposal team were called to Winchester city centre after a grenade was discovered.
The Royal Naval Southern Diving Unit attended the scene off of the Weirs, close of the Bishop on the Bridge pub, at around 2.15pm on Tuesday (August 11).
The unit were called to the River Itchen after a person magnet fishing had found an anti-tank grenade.
A spokesperson for the unit said: “[Our attendance] was as a result of some magnetic fishing, what they had found was an old anti-tank grenade in the river.
“The Southern Diving Unit attended and an inspection deemed the grenade was safe to be removed and it was taken away for destruction.”
The spokesperson told the Chronicle that the discovery was “quite an unusual find”.
Hampshire police were also in attendance at the site.
