A SECTION of Winchester Prison was damaged after it was struck by lightning last night (Thursday).

Crews from Winchester, St Mary's, Eastleigh, Basingstoke and Redbridge were called to the Romsey Road site 3.45pm.

The lightning strike hit an empty wing which is closed for renovation sustained minor damage to the external masonry.

A Ministry of Justice spokesperson said: "An empty wing sustained minor damage after being struck by lightning yesterday. No one was hurt and the prison regime was unaffected.”

Reports suggest that loud bang was heard across the area.

The fire service attended as a precaution.
