SIR: In recent says there have been letters in The Daily Telegraph about the replacing of railings in St James's Square, London. The original ones having been removed for the war effort. Were they used, or were they dumped into the River Thames, or even dumped out to sea?
When I pass the attractive curve of white houses in Eastgate Street (round the corner from the statue of King Alfred) I wonder whether the missing railings suffered the same fate?
Might they be replaced, if the owners so wished? Making Winchester even more beautiful.
