FIREFIGHTERS tackled an out of control bonfire in Bramdean Common yesterday (Wednesday).

Crews from Winchester, Alton, Petersfield and Eastleigh attended the incident in Woodlands at 5.50pm.

The blaze was started when a bonfire became out of control which spread to a large log store and other surrounding structures.

A Hampshire Fire and Rescue Service spokesperson said: “Crews from Winchester, Alton, Petersfield and Eastleigh were mobilised at 17:50 yesterday to a farm in Woodlands, Bramdean Common.

“The fire involved 20 tonnes of wood in an outbuilding and was extinguished using two high-pressure hose reels.

“The outbuilding was severely affected by fire and the stop message came in at 20:39.”

One the firefighters who attended the scene, station manager Andy Weeks said on social media: “Make sure you monitor bonfires as they can easily spread in this warm dry weather.”

Yesterday crews were also called to a fire involving one hectare of stubble and 100 metres of hedgerow.

Crews from Eastleigh and Winchester were called to Bighton Lane, in Bishop’s Sutton.

“The fire was extinguished using four high-pressure hose reel and beaters,” the service spokesperson added.

The cause of the incident is not known.
