SIR: Re “Road to be closed to traffic”, Chronicle, June 18.

The narrowing and closure of city centre streets just might have been seen as sensible two to three months ago - but we may be at the point of reducing social distancing to one metre as I write.

Please let’s stop this madness which only “may” benefit shops and businesses according to Cllr Tod. Let’s ensure that emergency services can get down North Walls and also into Hyde with no delays- and if concerns linger, why not ask people to walk into town on the right-hand side and back on the other - no fuss, no costs, no risk of a “temporary“ closure becoming permanent.
