A MAN was rushed to hospital after a sports bike went "flying through the air" on a busy Southampton road.

Emergency services were called to the crash scene at Portland Terrace just before 8.30pm on Thursday, following a report of a crash involving a motorbike and car.

Police described the motorbike as a "moped" but it is belived the vehicle is a Yamaha R1. 

A man in his 20s suffered injuries to his leg and was taken to hospital.

The motorbike, understood to be a 1000cc sports bike, is believed to have landed upside down after hitting an internet provider Vostron company van, which was parked on the road last night.

One nearby resident said: "The bike went through air, hit the gates and hit our van, and landed almost vertically. It left the pavement and went about 20 to 30 metres into the air.

"It must have flipped over and buckled the fence. Looks like the rider skidded down the pavement."

A spokesman for Hampshire Constabulary said: "We were called just before 8.30pm yesterday (May 21) to a report of a collision involving a moped and car in Portland Terrace, Southampton.

"A man in his 20s suffered injuries to his leg and was taken to hospital. Officers are making enquiries into the exact circumstances of the collision."
