The Winchester district has one of the highest infection rates for Covid-19 in the UK, according to new figures published by the Government.

The district on Thursday had 330 cases, a rate of 265 people per 100,000 people, second only in Hampshire to Basingstoke and Deane which has 631 cases, the equivalent of 359 per 100,000.

The Winchester rate is higher than Southampton, 519, 205 per 100,000; New Forest, 238, 132 per 100,000; Isle of Wight 149, 105 per 100,000; Eastleigh 241, 182 per 100,000; East Hampshire 252, 208 per 100,000; Fareham 163, 140 per 100,000; Portsmouth 299, 139 per 100,000 and Test Valley, 279 cases, 222 per 100,000.

The Winchester rate is higher than many parts of London and big cities such as Manchester. Only 69 local authority areas have a higher infection rate. There are well over 300 such areas.

The highest is Barrow in Furness in Cumbria with 804 per 100,000. The vast majority of worst-affected areas are areas of London and big cities or towns such as Blackpool, Carlisle, Liverpool, Newcastle, Oxford, Sheffield and Sunderland.

Meanwhile, a further four people who have tested positive for coronavirus have died in Hampshire in the last 24 hours to Thursday .

The NHS has released updated figures which revealed that four people have died across the county - it brings the total to 509 up from 505 on Wednesday.

The statistics cover University Hospital Southampton NHS Foundation Trust (UHS), Hampshire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, Southern Health NHS Foundation Trust and Portsmouth Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust.

At UHS, 155 patients have died who tested positive for the virus, up by four since April 6.

At Hampshire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, 140 people have died with no new deaths since Tuesday.

In total, 199 people have died at Portsmouth Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust after contracting the virus, with no change since Wednesday.

There have been no more coronavirus related deaths at Southern Health NHS Foundation Trust where 15 people have died after testing positive for Covid-19.

This figure has remained the same since May 1.
