A further 403 people, who tested positive for Covid-19 have died, bringing the total number of confirmed reported deaths in hospitals in England to 4,897.

The patients were aged between 35 and 106-years-old.

NHS England said 15 of the 403 patients – aged between 52 and 94-years-old – had no known underlying health condition.

Their families have been informed.

The latest figures come after Prime Minister Boris Johnson spent last night night in hospital after he was admitted for tests as his coronavirus symptoms persist.
He will stay for "as long as needed" in the London NHS hospital where he was taken as a "precautionary step" on the advice of his doctor - rather than as an emergency.

Mr Johnson, 55, tested positive for the virus 10 days ago, and has been in self-isolation inside his Downing Street flat since.

A Number 10 spokeswoman said: "On the advice of his doctor, the Prime Minister has tonight been admitted to hospital for tests.

"This is a precautionary step, as the Prime Minister continues to have persistent symptoms of coronavirus 10 days after testing positive for the virus.

"The Prime Minister thanks NHS staff for all of their incredible hard work and urges the public to continue to follow the Government's advice to stay at home, protect the NHS and save lives."

The increase of 403 is the lowest daily increase since last Tuesday March 31 when 393 died, suggesting the rate is beginning to slow. The figure for Hampshire is 921, up 45, the smallest rise since Friday March 27.

Nationally the number of confirmed cases is now 51,608.
