WICKHAM Horse Fair has been cancelled, because of the Coronavirus outbreak.

Superintendent Alison Heydari, police commander for the annual fair, due to have been held on May 21, said today: "We all need to play our part in stopping the spread of this infection and saving the lives of others, so unfortunately this year’s event cannot take place.

"Please pass on this message to anyone you know who had been planning to come, so that they don’t travel unnecessarily.

"The decision was taken following consultation between representatives from the event and local authorities, including Hampshire Constabulary, Winchester City Council and Hampshire County Council. We look forward to seeing everyone when the event next takes place in 2021."

The one-day event is massive part of the traveller community's calendar attracting people from across the UK.

It is a place to buy and sell horses as well as a huge social gathering for travellers.
