A MEON Valley farm's attempt to diversify has been backed by planners, at the second time of asking.

Shady Oaks Farm on Durley Brook Road, Durley, wanted permission to use land as a store for caravans and motor homes. The plan was rejected by the planning committee last September.

The applicants, Mr and Mrs C Reeves and Mr and Mrs R Reeves, recently sought permission for up to 40 caravans in future, 20 down on the first proposal and covering a smaller area.

Last time the planning committee was split. Some councillors argued that the farm should be supported in its diversification plan.

Others including chairman Therese Evans said it was against planning policy

Planning officer Liz Marsden told the committee there was no reason why the store needed to be in the countryside and would "have a detrimental impact on the rural character of the area."

The planners remained opposed saying it was an incongruous feature for the countryside.

The farmers plan had the strong support of Durley Parish Council.

Cllr Steve Miller was supportive. "this is one of many small farms struggling to survive. They need to be encouraged to diversify and this is a very good attempt to do so."

Jade Reeves, one of the applicants, said: "We need to diversify the farm to help us tend the land. We will still continue to have cattle and chickens and use the pastures for hay.""

This time the committee voted to support the scheme.
