A 17-year-old boy has appeared in court charged with the murder of a 50-year-old mother of two in a quiet village.

Joanna Thompson was found dead at a property in Hambledon on July 1 last year.

A post-mortem examination showed she died as a result of neck injuries.

The teenager, who has been detained under the Mental Health Act, appeared via video link for the short hearing at Salisbury Crown Court.

He spoke only to confirm his name and date of birth and gave his nationality as British.

Judge Keith Cutler set a trial date for October 2 to be held at Winchester Crown Court with a plea and trial preparation hearing on June 29.

Remanding the defendant in custody, he told him: "There will be future hearings but hopefully you will go back to where you came from this morning, you will be speaking to your legal team over the next weeks and months and please do co-operate with anything that is asked of you."
