WINCHESTER parkrun has been cancelled with immediate effect, as events across the UK are called off.
Initial closures will be in place until the end of March, however, the national body of parkruns, said this is largely to bring all parkrun countries into the same time frame and closures could continue through April.
David Howells, member of the Winchester parkrun core team, that it has been a disappointing time for the city’s parkrun organisers after flooding cancelled several events in the previous weeks.
He said: “The national body of parkruns has instructed all local parkrun organisers that, in line with public health advice, the decision has been taken to close all parkrun events across the UK with immediate effect. Initially, this closure will be in place until the end of March, however this is largely to bring all parkrun countries into the same time frame and we very much expect closures to continue through April at least. The announcement included advice that informal group gatherings at local parkrun venues should also not be arranged.
“In announcing this disappointing decision, the organisers are keen to emphasise that remaining active is incredibly important, and they are working on ways to encourage and support alternative exercise regimes.
“It has been a disappointing time for the Winchester parkrun organisers with several events having to be cancelled owing to the adverse weather conditions and a waterlogged course.”
