THE Freedom of Winchester Parade planned for this Saturday has been postponed.

The Army said it has taken the decision following Government advice to stop the spread of the coronavirus.

Such parades in Winchester usually attract several thousands spectators.

The Army Training Regiment, based at the Sir John Moore Barracks at Littleton, had planned to march from Peninsula Barracks down the High Street to The Broadway, and then back, behind a band and bearing arms.

In a statement the Army said: "A Freedom Parade is a special and unique event for the whole city to enjoy and celebrate. It will be hosted at a time when we can maximise community attendance so it can be enjoyed by all. We apologise for any disappointment and inconvenience this postponement may have caused.

"Army Training Regiment (Winchester) would again like to thank the Mayor and people of Winchester for their continued support. We are committed to maintaining our service to our recruits, permanent staff and the local community and remain focussed on limiting the impact of the COVID-19 outbreak."
