SOUTHAMPTON businesses which are struggling to survive due to Coronavirus may have been thrown a vital lifeline.

Rich Gilbert owns three businesses - Cafe Parfait, Switch and the luxury bar, 1932 Southampton.

However, the 36-year-old reports that times are very tough.

He adds it will be a struggle to survive if the global health crisis goes on for a prolonged period.

But, "out of the blue" this morning, Rich received a call from his landlord offering a 50 per cent rent reduction for the next three months.

According to the entrepreneur, his landlord recognises times are very tough and wanted to share the burden.

Originally from Chandler's Ford, Rich is preparing to "batten down the hatches" after Boris Johnson urged the public to avoid gatherings and crowded places, such as pubs, clubs and theatres.

Rich says that last week business was down 40 per cent and described Friday as terrible after DJ act Chase & Status pulled out from playing.

Rich said: "It's devastating the prime minister has asked people not to go to clubs.

"It is going to be a very tough time for us and a struggle to survive it goes on for any prolonged period.

"Trade has dropped to nothing. Nothing compares to this. It's unprecedented.

"Our landlord reducing the rent sets a great example that hopefully more landlords will follow and help our friends within the industry.

"I think local people helping each other is what we need right now.

"We are open as normal and welcome people with welcome arms.

"However we strongly advise anyone who does not feel 100 per cent to stay at home and think of others.

"Life needs to go on. I want to support my full-time staff and give them all the hours we can.

"I want to thank my landlord."
