TWO pupils at a Winchester primary school have tested negative for coronavirus, their headteacher has said.

Western Church of England Primary School announced on Monday last week that two members of the school community were undergoing tests for COVID-19 and parts of the building in Browning Drive underwent a clean.

On Sunday headteacher Peter Burbridge wrote a letter to parents informing them of the update.

He said: “I am pleased to inform you that all test results for the individuals concerned, have come back as negative and therefore there is no requirement for us to close or undertake any additional measures at this time.”

Mr Burbridge continued: “Naturally, as the numbers contracting COVID-19 nationally increase and in particular the number of fatalities rises as a result of this virus, parents and carers will be concerned about their children at school.

“Please be assured that the health and safety of all children and staff at Western, is our prime consideration and we will endeavour to continue to operate normally, whilst following the guidelines and information that we receive from Public Health England, NHS, Department for Education or the Local authority during this time.

“As you would expect, we are planning and considering how we will continue to operate during the coming weeks in relation to all aspects of school, if the current situation alters. We will keep you informed of any changes to normal school routines at the appropriate time and when we have all the necessary information to make those decisions.”

He also thanked parents for their “calm approach and supportive responses to last week’s letter”.
