STUDENTS were feeling “safe and not concerned” as many arrived for class at Peter Symonds College today (Monday).

Over the weekend and pupils were made aware that a student at the college has been diagnosed with coronavirus and were in self-isolation.

Despite some in the city calling for schools and colleges to be closed those who turned up to Peter Symonds were not worried about the diagnosis.

One student Nadia Richards said: “I am not concerned about it, I don’t think it is that big of an issue – it is not like we are super old; we are not going to die. I think if someone has existing health issues, they shouldn’t come in.”

Another pupil Emily Hammond said: “I am not too worried, I don’t think it is going to really badly affect anyone our age.”

Speaking about the college remaining open, she added: “Public Health England has told us it is fine.”

“I think they said they did a deep clean, they think it is safe, they don’t want to put us in danger,” another student, who wished not to be named, said.

One pupil spoke to say: “I don’t think the danger is that high.”

And speaking about why he came into college: “I don’t want to get behind as there is a lot of work to do.”
