ATTENDANCE at Oliver's Battery Primary School is "less than usual" this morning amidst coronavirus fears, according to a parent.

Yesterday it was confirmed that two pupils are self isolating after they travelled in a taxi that has had another traveller with a confirmed diagnosis of the virus.

This morning, one parent who wishes to remain anonymous, said: "There are less cars around – there are more kids and parents around on every other day, usually much busier. This is less than usual."

But they added that they are "not worried" about the coronavirus and believe it has "been hyped up".

"There's not a lot we can do." they continued. "If they get it, they get it. Kids are strong and have good immune systems, they'll be able to fight it out.

"One of my friends went home yesterday and washed absolutely everything. I think this whole thing has been hyped up out of proportion.

"If I was worried the kids wouldn't be coming in."

Another parent who also asked not to be identified said they think the school are taking the right precautions.

"It's not a directly confirmed case so I'm not too fussed at the moment. The school are being very sensible about it," they said.

"It was the same with Swine Flu, everyone would say 'you can't do this, you can't do that'. I think it's just one of those – we've got to wait and see and not be too irrational."

The Chronicle has attempted to speak to headteacher Carly Redfern but awaits a response.

Parents and carers have been given further information and advised to contact the school office or NHS 111 for support and guidance.

It is unclear if it is linked to the confirmed Hampshire case that Public Health England announced today.
