Fans of period thrillers and gothic horrors should look to The Black Veil, which heads to Theatre Royal Winchester from February 28 to 29.

Based on Charles Dickens’ classic Victorian short story thriller, this chilling stage adaptation by playwright John Goodrum tells the story of a newly-qualified doctor, Stephen Ruggles, who is visited by a mysteriously-veiled elderly woman who begs him to visit a nameless patient at daybreak the following morning.

Against his better judgement, Ruggles agrees, only to become embroiled in a web of lies and deceit that ends in death – but for whom?

Brought to the stage by Rumpus Theatre Company – which, formed in 1994, produces everything from contemporary comedy to gothic horrors – they take the audience on a dark and intriguing journey from the back streets of Dickens’ London to the East End docks, with an electrifying climax in a watermill on the outskirts of the city.

A sinister and suspenseful tale, packed with atmosphere, dramatic lighting and sound effects, and shocks, The Black Veil is suitable for audiences aged 12 years and above.

A post show chat follows the Friday evening performance.
