TODAY is Blue Monday - not named after the song by New Order, but the most depressing day of the year.

So what can you do to cheer yourself up?

Here are some things to look forward to this week/things you can do to put a smile on your face:

1. Open Mic Night at the Railway Inn

Whether you're a talented artist or just looking for some entertainment, Open Mic Night has been going strong at the Railway for the last 25 years or so.

They welcome all standards of musician, poets, comics and artists in general.

A sound engineer will be provided and anyone taking part will get to know what performing live feels like.

The next Open Mic Night is at 8pm TONIGHT (January 20).

Entry is free.

2. Wine and Boardgames at Toscanaccio

Who doesn't like boardgames? And who doesn't like a good bottle of wine?

If you're looking for something fun to do on Friday night, bring a friend and play some board games at Toscanaccio in Parchment Street.

The shop brings board gaming prowess and referee (in the shape of resident gamer, Jimmie) to the bar area once a month.

The games (and pouring) will start from 7pm, Friday evening.

3. Go for a walk through Winnall Moors

Nothing clears the mind like a good walk.

And there's a fantastic route right here in the city centre.

Winnall Moors, which can be entered just off Wales Street, has plenty of wildlife including otters and water voles.

And if you've already walked through the moors plenty of times, here is our list of walks in and around Winchester: www.hampshirechronicle.co.uk/news/18146653.places-walk-near-winchester/

4. Consider volunteering

Winchester and its district has dozens of charities that are always looking for new volunteers.

What better way to put a smile on your face than to help others?

If you can't think of any charities, then why not try the Watercress Line, based in Alresford?

The charity has recently put an appeal out looking for new helpers.

5. Learn about wellbeing

The Hampshire Health Hub is back at Winchester Guildhall on Sunday (January 26).

Organised by the Wessex Wellness Group, the event will have workshops to help with wellbeing techniques, expert advice and stalls from local businesses.

It will run between 10am and 4pm, and will be free to enter.
