VOLUNTEER waste warriors spent a day cleaning up a bit of Meon Valley countryside plagued with fly-tipping, and were filmed hard at work.

The group found and removed dozens of oil containers, car parts, lorry tyres, a fridge and even a bottle shaped like a chicken from a footpath near Swanmore.

Tyres thrown down a hill by fly-tippers were hauled up and a trailer base was cut up with a disc cutter and removed for disposal.

The volunteers were helped by local farmer Shane and his dog and Hampshire-based L&S Waste Management provided a skip to take away the rubbish.

Local businessman Martin Montague, founder of the ClearWaste.com fly-tip reporting app and website, who organised the clean-up, said: "We found and removed a huge amount of stuff that was not only an eyesore but was also a danger to wildlife and the environment in general.

"Waste crime is disgraceful - these fly-tippers don't care about the harm they do to the countryside as was proved by what we found today - amongst them was some very sharp metal items and an oil drum with oil in it.

"Fortunately there are some lovely, public-spirited people around like the folks who turned up today to help. Some of what they did today was really back-breaking and I'm really grateful to everyone who came to help."

A film crew from Channel 5's series Grime and Punishment was on hand to document the work of the clean-up team and the programme will be shown next year.
