MAKING history as the first school in the UK to host a plastic-free day, teaching their pupils about climate change is made a top priority here.

For many parents, they hope their children will be given a voice to make a difference.

At Hook-with-Warsash CofE Academy, pupils are encouraged to share their concerns to school councillors, which has led to less plastic use and the instalment of a friendship tree.

Their pupils - with their parent’s help - came up with the idea of 8th of May Plastic Free Day to be held every year on David Attenborough’s birthday.

Now, they have inspired 153 schools across England who have followed in their footsteps.

The school dates back to 1871, when a man called Arthur Hornby donated money to build a school and church further along Church Road.

Then, four classrooms were built in a separate site, and all infants were moved there.

The old building was then closed as a school and became a day nursery, and all its pupils were moved to its current site.

Since then, the academy has grown from 120 to 413 pupils and focuses on music, sport, climate change and community.

On Remembrance Sunday, a service is held by the school for local groups, and children make crafts throughout the day.

The school also prides itself on its annual performance at Ferneham Hall, Fareham.

Young actors took to the stage to perform The Little Mermaid Disney last week, which was their 21st show to date.
