A CAR has smashed into railings in Winchester - but the driver had disappeared when police arrived.

Police say they were called to the crash on Magdalen Hill, Winchester, around 4.10am today.

However, police say the driver was not with the vehicle.

A spokesperson for Hampshire Police said: "We were called at 4.15am to reports of a vehicle which had been in collision with some railings on Magdalen Hill, Winchester. No one was with the vehicle."

Police did not give further details.

The crash was at high speed as the airbags had deployed and the force of the impact severed the Victorian cast iron post and hurled it five yards.
