Ralph Hasenhuttl believes he has become a better manager as a result of the 9-0 defeat to Leicester.

The Saints boss has faced a testing time in the wake of the hammering at St Mary’s last Friday night.

Though he obviously wishes the humbling never happened, Hasenhuttl is determined that is serves as a learning process for him and the squad.

He said: “It never happened that I lost a game like this and it has been very challenging but this is what we are here for.

“It’s not an easy job and never is and in such moments it’s important you are a strong manager and look for the right decisions.

“This is new for me but I am now a better manager than before and this is the good thing and if the players see the same then they know they are better players in the future.”

Hasenhuttl admitted that he drew on an experience as player where he figured in a side that were reduced to ten men and lost 6-1.

But he didn’t exactly have a lot of time to dwell on things with two trips to Manchester City to plan.

It is safe to say that Hasenhuttl didn’t get a lot of sleep on Friday night as the events of the evening replayed in his mind.

“I have forgotten it seems so long ago,” he said. “I said that it’s not an easy situation for anybody at the club if you lose like this.

“Nothing before the game shows in this direction for me. A good warm-up, a good game plan I think and after ten minutes and the goal and the red card you think ‘ok, this game will not be easy to win,’ but nothing showed we get nine goals in this moment. This happens in football suddenly that you are three or five down at half time.

“Any change you make the team is out of balance and you try to get discipline but the game is gone and the final action for two minutes overtime and then a penalty. Everything comes together in this moment. Every shot was a goal.

“These moments are not easy for anybody and it’s not easy to find the sleep then and the next days to find the right words and the right tone for team.

“We did it not so bad because we showed on Tuesday another face and a better face and this was not so bad.”

Most people connected with Saints felt a sense of shock after what they witnessed as Leicester ran riot.

Hasenhuttl was visibly emotional after the game but had to be the one to process it quickly so he could deliver the words the players needed to hear on Saturday morning.

“It’s my job to be the first guy who finds it back on track and be positive and stand up,” he reflected. “After the game everybody is down and this is normal but we know it’s not over. It’s October and we have a long way to go.

“When it’s at the end of the season and you are relegated at that moment it’s completely different but we lost one game. We lost in a hard way and also our goal difference and this is very bad for this whole situation.

“But in the end it is not over if you stand up and show up and get your heads up. You can’t make it unhappen and this mark we will have for our entire life and this result will stay but focus on what can happen and get the next three points.

“This is the good thing in football. You start 0-0 the next game.

“Also the schedule with two times Man City away everybody thinks you get nine goals against and twice at Man City but we showed on Tuesday we can do it better and we want to do it better than on Tuesday.”
