Saints have changed the way they defend due to the introduction of VAR.

The club have benefitted to the tune of six opposition goals being chalked out due to VAR already this season, and Hasenhuttl admitted they have taken video technology into account when planning their playing style.

He said: “I think we had a big discussion this week about VAR.

“So far it makes a fantastic job and not just because we had six goals disallowed but the way we want to defend at the moment is based on VAR.

“I remember that for the Cup game we said no VAR and we must defend different because we cannot stand in this line that long because to defend like we do in the moment it is necessary to have VAR.

“It is really especially for offside or not sometimes with the eye you cannot see it and you need the VAR.

“It is a fantastic job so far and makes the game fair which is what everybody asks for and what everybody was demanding for and what everybody wanted.

“It is fantastic so far and when we discuss about situations that the referee doesn’t get overruled for the VAR like for example the last game the penalty against us. I am still of the opinion this is right even though it was against us because the last decision must be for the referee.

“The only thing maybe we can speak about is to give him a chance to have a look on the scene again on the pitch so the decision still stays with him in the stadium and it is important for the supporters that the decision is taken in the stadium and not somewhere else because that’s the reason they go there.

“But when he has another look for the situation he can still decide if it was enough or not enough.

“It is the only change I can think about for the future but finally I think to overrule him from outside we had this in Germany and it was a disaster because from outside you cannot feel the feeling in the stadium or feel the atmosphere and you don’t know what happened before.

“That is something the referee can do much much better in the stadium and this is the reason I think for the moment this is ok and nearly never overrule him and in the end the last decision is with the referee.”
