RESIDENTS on one road in Chineham have united to stop three new houses being built on their narrow cul-de-sac.

Basingstoke and Deane Borough Council have recommended for approval plans that will see the new homes being built in the garden of a property on Reading Road, with access to vehicles coming from Catkin Close.

However, a local councillor has joined residents in calling for the plans to be stopped, saying the road is too narrow and that further vehicles using it will be dangerous to children and other people on the road.

“Firstly, I don’t think there’s enough parking for everybody (at present), but also construction traffic going up here, I don’t know how it’s going to fit,” said Chineham Cllr Laura Edwards.

“You’re going to have heavy lorries coming up here, there’s going to be noise, and it’s just a lot of upset, for what? No return for residents.”

As well as the three new houses, each with two parking spaces, there will be three spots put in for an existing property that currently gets its access from Reading Road.

This is despite the report stating: “The proposed development could … provide safe access and adequate parking provision in accordance with highway requirements.”

Cllr Edwards was also worried about the location of the new houses with existing properties.

“We don’t feel that it is within keeping of the area, it’s not needed, it offers no community benefit.

“Residents’ homes will be overlooked and we’ll be losing green space,” she told the Gazette.

People currently living on Catkin Close gathered on Friday morning to vent their frustrations at the development, which they say they weren’t told about.

It came on the same day of a site visit from councillors ahead of it being put to the Development and Control committee on Thursday.

“We’re going to have three houses put in, but they’re not letting me move my fence, because it’s going to change the look of the street,” one resident said. “That doesn’t make any sense to me whatsoever.”

Councillors on the Development and Control committee will decide on Thursday whether to support the plans or not.
