IT HAS been 150 years since the Bishop of Winchester gave The Avenue to Alresford townspeople.
Residents and local organisations celebrated the anniversary last month, with the current Bishop, Reverend Tim Dakin, in attendance.
He planted a tree to mark the occasion, and gave a speech to attendees.
In 1869, Bishop Charles Sumner handed the open land and trees to the town – and there were strict terms attached to the gift.
The land was to be used for the recreation of the inhabitants of the town and for no other purpose whatever.
The event on Friday, organised by Alresford Town Trust, was a showcase of Alresford’s voluntary organisations, including The Giles Group, The Pigs, Friends of the Arle, Alresford Mens Shed, Churches Together and the Voluntary Care Group.
There was a portable bell tower on-site, and a vintage vehicle display was held alongside a number of crafts stalls.
Refreshment were provided by the WI.
