WINCHESTER City Council approves archaeological investigation for the Central Winchester Regeneration area.
Following a public consultation, archaeologists have been given the green light by Winchester City Council’s Cabinet to begin early investigations at the Central Winchester Regeneration area.
Archaeology has been a major discussion point throughout the extensive public consultation for the Central Winchester Regeneration project. As part of a public information event in 2018, an Archaeology Panel met with Winchester residents to address questions and discuss ideas.
Ongoing archaeological investigation will look closely at the soil conditions of the site which dates back to the Roman period. The investigations will provide vital, ongoing data and information about the site to inform the overall strategic approach for the area.
Cabinet Member for Housing and Asset Management, Cllr Kelsie Learney said: “At the archaeology event last year, our residents and the archaeology experts agreed that this was the best approach to take. I’m delighted to see that we are pressing ahead to discover more about this historic part of Winchester.”
“We know that many people are passionate about archaeology and it is vital that we fully understand what lies beneath the ground and take a sensitive approach as we look ahead at transforming the area.”
