A 96-year-old resident of a Winchester care home had her wish come true when she was whisked-off for a spin with a biker.

Joyce Ward’s love of motorbikes was discovered following a trip to Hampshire’s Milestones Museum, where they have a display of bikes.

It was many years since she had experienced the thrill of taking to the open road and she told staff at St Catherines View, it was her special wish to be able to ride on a motorbike again.

Laura Sheldrake from the companionship team set about making her dream come true by contacting the Southampton and District Motorcycle Club.

While riding pillion wasn’t really an option, travelling on a trike was the answer so Joyce could ride in a bit more comfort.

Laura said: “Mark Hibberd, who is known as ‘Bear,’ very kindly offered to take Joyce on a ride around Winchester. He was so good and made sure Joyce was comfortable throughout the experience.

“Joyce was smiling throughout the whole ride from St. Catherine's View through to Hursley, onto Otterbourne and through Winchester town. She loved having everyone watch her and waved at those walking and staring at the bike procession that was approaching.”

The Southampton and District Motorcycle Club members and associates gave up their time to make sure Joyce had the time of her life - and it was greatly appreciated by her family.

Granddaughter Hilary Bloomfield said: “I couldn’t believe it when I got the call to explain what my grandmother was going to be doing. I am so glad my grandmother came to St Catherine's View as they always go above and beyond and this is just another example of what they can make possible for the residents.

“They can make something that seems impossible - possible for the residents, they always try to find a way.”

St Catherine's View offers a dedicated dementia community from its location close to the historic city centre of Winchester.

The home is part of Colten Care, an independent and family-run company determined to set the highest standards in all aspects of care for the elderly.
