WORK to renew Winchester crumbling paving gets under way next week, with phased pavement closures for the next few months.

Hampshire County Council’s highways team will renew the paving on the High Street between Tower Street and Southgate Street from Monday, September 9.

To access to businesses, the work will be done by closing sections of the footway during the day for eight weeks.

Cllr Rob Humby, executive member for economy, transport and environment, said: “Renewing the paving slabs in this busy area of Winchester is part of our programme to make Hampshire’s roads and footways more resilient to the impact of heavy traffic and winter weather.

“This area of Winchester particularly suffers from vehicles pulling up on the footways which damages the paving slabs over time, and so a programme of replacing them will soon be underway. We are looking at how we can better manage deliveries from goods vehicles as part of the Winchester Movement Strategy”
