REVELLERS from near and far thronged the town’s streets in anticipation for the big event.
It was estimated more than 20,000 people, including visitors from other towns and villages, packed the pavements for Eastleigh Carnival on August 26, 1959.
The procession snaked splendidly for more than a mile, and it was apparent to all that it would be the biggest and best up until that date. The number of entries for all categories were much higher than the previous year.
Many helped to enhance the carnival atmosphere by decorating their homes.
