AN OSCAR winning director is to shoot his newest film onboard a luxury cruise liner bound for Southampton.

Steven Soderbergh and a star studded cast, including 21 time Academy Award nominated actress Meryl Streep, will film the unnamed flick while on the Queen Mary 2 this week.

The film will feature the famous Cunard cruise-liner on the iconic Transatlantic Crossing and will be filmed over a seven-day east bound voyage from New York to Southampton.

The ship is due to arrive in the city on August 24.

The film is the latest from critically-acclaimed director Soderbergh, who directed Oceans Eleven and Liberace biopic Behind the Candelabra.

He was also famously received two Academy Award nominations in the 2001 for Best Director, for Erin Brockovich and Traffic – the latter of which won the award.

Alongside Meryl Streep his latest film stars Candice Bergen, Gemma Chan, Lucas Hedges and Dianne Wiest.

Queen Mary 2 guests will also have the exciting opportunity to appear in the film as extras.

Gregory Jacobs is producing, with Ken Meyer and Joseph Malloch executive producing the film, which was recently acquired by HBO Max.

Simon Palethorpe, President of Cunard, said: “We’re delighted to be hosting Steven Soderbergh, Meryl Streep and a star studded cast on our flagship for what will be an incredible movie.”

Cunard has a long history of hosting stars of stage and screen on board their iconic ships.

Luminaries such as Elizabeth Taylor, Rita Hayworth, Wes Anderson, and Tilda Swinton have all sailed with the luxury travel brand.

Sting performed a set in Queen Mary 2’s Royal Court Theatre; Ed Sheeran wrote part of his last album on a crossing; and Francis Ford Coppola sailed recently to work on his book while at sea.

In December 2017, Queen Mary 2 hosted the global premiere with a star-studded event for The Greatest Showman, starring Hugh Jackman, Michelle Williams, Zac Efron, Rebecca Ferguson, and Zendaya.

The Queen Mary 2 is the Cunard flagship and is one of the ‘Three Queens’, alongside sister ships the Queen Elizabeth and the Queen Victoria.

In a rare event, the Three Queens visited Southampton together earlier this month.

The last time they were all together was a year earlier, in August 2018.

The three cruise ships left Southampton together and, while in the Solent, were given a fly-over by the famous Red Arrows.
