DISCUSSIONS are underway to open a new multi-faith centre in Winchester city centre.

Winchester City Council confirmed it was in discussions with the Winchester Muslim Cultural Association to find a suitable place.

One possibility would be the former Citizens Advice base in the Casson Block on St George's Street.

As previously reported, the city council officially opened the new Citizens Advice hub in Colebrook Street last month.

The charity, which helps thousands of clients each year with issues ranging from benefits advice to debt and consumer problems, has been in the city since 1953.

Their new ground-level location next to Winchester City Council, is more accessible than their previous upstairs office in the Casson Block on St George’s Street and the newly-renovated rental space provides a more welcoming space for clients, volunteers and staff alike.

A spokesman for the city council said: "We have been in discussion with the association about the creation of a multi-faith centre for some time.

“We are considering the options for the building on St George’s Street and will continue to support the association to help them find them accommodation to fulfil their ambitions.”

The association has been contacted for comment, but is yet to respond.
