ST Giles CC were victors in the King Alfred Trophy cricket tournament, an event that grew from a campaign to protect a Winchester park.

The fifth King Alfred tournament took place at North Walls Recreation Ground last Sunday; with four teams: the Royal Hampshire County Hospital CC, St Giles CC, The Racqueteers and The Hyde All Stars.

Play began promptly at 11am, following an update to the assembled cricketers about progress with fundraising for a new pavilion.Funds raised now stand at over 70 per cent of the £600,000 target.

The first two matches were close-run and resulted in The Racqueteers playing St Giles CC for the trophy and the RHCH playing The Hyde All Stars in the final matches.

St Giles CC scored an unbeatable 193 off 20 overs against The Racqueteers and claimed the trophy, which they last won in 2014. The RHCH took home the wooden spoon.

This year’s event was sponsored by Dulux Decorator Centre Winchester which recently opened in Moorside Road, Winnall. The firm also made a generous donation to The Pavilion Project.
