A ROMSEY Tory president has resigned after "democracy died" when the UK did not leave the EU.

Jean Lanning, the now former president of the Romsey Conservative Association resigned on March 29 after the UK did not leave the EU as originally planned.

This comes after MP's did not approve Theresa Mays Brexit deal.

Mrs Lanning who was the president for the association for four years said she decided to step down as: "Theresa May has not done what she has promised."

She added: "I resigned by a matter of principle.

"I'm a democrat and I think democracy died on March 29 and I feel like the Conservatives have been let down."

Mrs Lanning confirmed that she has not had a dispute with Caroline Nokes and she said: "As a cabinet member she is doing the right thing supporting a leader."

She added: "I have supported the Prime Minster as much as I can and it's a puzzle how it has all ended."

When asked why she voted to leave the EU Mrs Lanning said: "I voted to leave as I wanted our sovereignty back.

"I think there should be a general election to clear the air."

Chairman of the Conservative Association, Cllr Nick Adams-King said:

ā€œIā€™m very sorry Jean has chosen to take this step. Our party has always been a broad church, a coalition of varying views and while not always agreeing with one another has been respectful of the viewpoint of others.

"It is a huge regret to me that over the issue of Brexit both my own party many people in general appear to have lost that tolerance.ā€
