A FAN of former BBC Radio Solent presenter Nick Girdler has launched an attempt to get him his job back.

Margaret Amy, 71, of Shirley, Southampton, has set up an online petition following the BBC's decision not to renew Nick's rolling contract, which expired last month.

Margaret launched a similar petition after the freelance presenter was asked to leave BBC Radio Solent in 2006, only to return three years later.

Her new petition has already attracted more than 200 signatures.

She said: "Nick was given just ten days' notice before his final programme was broadcast on February 24.

"This is a grossly unfair and unjust way to treat a much loved and uniquely talented presenter who has demonstrated such professionalism to generations of listeners.

"Nick has given over 45 years' of loyal service to Radio Solent.

"He has a wonderful rapport with people of all ages - his listeners, guests on the programme and the many callers he has on air."

A BBC spokesperson said: “Nick Girdler has contributed greatly to the success of BBC Radio Solent over the past decades and we would like to thank him whole-heartedly for his contribution to broadcasting.

"We have decided to change the line-up on Sunday mornings.

"We hope listeners will continue to enjoy listening to our mix of great personalities, music, interviews, phone-ins, news and sport on BBC Radio Solent at the weekends.”
