A WINCHESTER school has been rated as one of the best in Hampshire for Maths and English GCSEs.

The number of Henry Beaufort students scoring a grade five or higher in the subjects has placed the school fifth in the County Performance League Table of 2018.

Headteacher Sue Hearle said: "These results are testimony to the hard work and dedication of my colleagues. Their professionalism is matched by the determination and ambition of our students.

"I am delighted that these qualities have been rewarded with excellent results that reflect on the success of the school year on year."

Middle attainers at the school achieved over half a grade higher than their expected results across all exams.

In a number of subjects, Henry Beaufort teachers appealed to have the papers remarked, which resulted in students being awarded an upgrade on their original result.

The second wave of appeal results arrived too late to be included in the published performance tables.
